I recently created these spelling word rings for my students to use during literacy centers. Oh, the difference it has made! No more rummaging in desks for spelling words, or interrupting Miss H during guided reading to let her know that you don’t have your spelling word list. (Which are typically stuffed in the back of a desk in a crumpled mess.) Many of my sweet second graders still struggle keeping their desks orderly but the rings have come to the rescue.
Enter Spelling Word Rings to save the day!
Spelling Word Rings are perfect for literacy centers and small groups because they stay on a ring and with all the other lesson materials. We use the Journeys 2017 HMH reading program which has 12 spelling words, 2 review words, and 2 challenge words each week. This resource contains an individual ring for each of the 30 weeks with all 16 words. I found these rings to be helpful in keeping all the necessary words for the week in one place and all together.
The spelling words are stored on a ring with each of the lessons in a Sterlite tub (the best storage tubs in the world) keeping all the materials together for the week. I store everything in these tubs and to be honest, have an obscene amount of them in my classroom. They work perfectly for storing math manipulatives and the lids stay on when moved around the room.
But I digress, back to the Spelling Word Rings…
These rings are a wonderful tool and enable my students to work independently while at our word work station. I print these cards on bright Astro Brights Card Stock and cut them out. I don’t laminate this resource and it has held up well in my classroom. Each Spelling Word card is labeled with the lesson number and there is a dark circle to identify where to punch the holes for easy assembly.
Print and Go, no fuss.
Enjoy!
