I don’t really think you need a new year to set goals but it seems fitting to set some with New Year’s Eve rapidly approaching. This past week, I was putting together a plan and some goals for some things I have been working on. The plan was really coming together, and after having some small successes, I shared my plan with someone. I couldn’t help it, it just slipped out in my excitement. The minute it did I realized I had made a mistake.
There I was as excited as a puppy, then squash, party over. The reaction was less than I hoped for, to say the least.
From my experience, it is important to safeguard our goals. Keep your goals close and share them with those you trust and who you know to support you. Popular opinion is to share goals so you will be more committed to them. Um, I’m not so sure. Share goals with yourself in the bathroom mirror maybe and write them down, but perhaps not broadcast them.
To share or not to share, that is the question.
Have you ever heard the story of how crabs stay in a bucket without a lid? Bear with me, I have a point, I promise.
It goes like this, on one sunny afternoon a man was walking along the beach and saw another man fishing in the surf with a bait bucket beside him. As he drew closer, he saw that the bait bucket had no lid and had live crabs inside. “Why don’t you cover your bait bucket so the crabs won’t escape?” he asked. “You don’t understand.” the man replied, “If there is one crab in the bucket it would surely crawl out very quickly. However, when there are many crabs in the bucket, if one tries to crawl up the side, the others will grab hold of it and pull it back down so that it will share the same fate as the rest of them.”
Human nature can be similar to crabs. Not everyone is going to lift you up, and that is okay, just know that going in. I have never forgotten this story, and I think of it often when these types of situations arise – it always makes me feel a little better. #truth #reallife
